World Link Flex Student of the Month
Nuraiym is a standout student. She has volunteered 144 service hours. She has a passion for sharing culture, giving 37 cultural presentations and was selected as a World Link FLEX IEW 2018 Finalist. Nuraiym maintains high grades and a busy schedule. She’s involved in FFA, FCCLA, Student Council, and 4-H. She loves cheerleading and performing for choir and show choir.
Nuraiym’s December volunteering was holiday-filled. She spent a whole day interacting with guests at the Christkindl Market. The cold did not keep her from two-shifts of bell ringing for the Salvation Army. She made and hand-delivered a little present to a blind man in her community. She sang holiday carols to the elderly and children. At two events, she brought more children holiday joy as she helped them make ornaments. The library is Nuraiym’s favorite place to volunteer. Since her arrival, she has volunteered at their events and decorated the bulletin board each season on top of her regular shifts. The librarian says Nuraiym is a treasure.
During #IEW2018, Nuraiym presented to over 900 community members. Each day, she wore a different style of traditional dress. She created 10 presentations, tailoring each to her audience’s interest. Math class learned shapes and numbers in Kyrgyz. Foods class learned to cook “Chak-Chak”, a national dessert. Her choir learned to sing “Sary Oi”. She organized a unique activity, a hair-braiding contest in the Kyrgyz traditional style. Nuraiym brought together her host family, the community, and the program by having her host sister help teach her national dance.
Nuraiym was welcomed into the family the moment she arrived at the airport and their bond has only grown stronger. They enjoy volunteering together. When Nuraiym’s name was called for Senior Night, her host mom joined her on the field. If Nuraiym has a performance, the family is there to support her. Her host mom says they are blessed to have her and are proud of all she’s accomplished.
